We were in Barcelona for a week and signed up with 4 viator trips, and this was the best. Sam was delightful, flexible, and adapted the hike to our ability. When the original hike on Montserrat mountain was socked in with fog and rain, he immediately changed plans, took us to another hike on the other side of Barcelona where the weather was perfect. He provided hiking poles as we did not want to bring them on the plane. The views were incredible and the commentary he provided was great.

Had a wonderful visit to the Montserrat Monastery. Our guide was fabulous and so knowledgeable. It was an absolute treat to learn about the vast knowledge in inclusion to generic general trivia about the place. The monastery itself was stunning and the trip right to the top by a tram was a cherry on the cake. We had a great group with us as well, and our guide was so courteous and helpful throughout the tour. A lovely hike back down, as per our pace. Enjoyed every bit of this. Highly recommend doing this tour with GYG.

Discover secret places: The secret waterfalls of the Pyrenees Hike

Sant Aniol d'Aguja Waterfall

Tour Rating: 5/5

Tour length: 8 hours

This hike is great for hikers of different fitness levels to experience the beauty of the Alt Garrotxa region. The leading destination and absolute highlight of the walk is the Sant Aniol d’Aguja waterfall.

Once you arrive at the waterfall, you can look forward to a refreshing dip in the cool water (don’t forget your swimsuit!).

But even on the way there, you can enjoy incredible landscapes and turquoise water pools. The region is slightly remote and, therefore, a rather less visited nature reserve.

You can choose between a route of 10 or 16 km. The tour is family-friendly and can therefore be done with children.

The secret waterfalls of the Pyrenees Hike includes

  • full-day guided tour
  • trained mountain guide
  • Transportation from Girona
  • snacks
  • Cancellation option up to 24 hours before the start of the tour

It was a beautiful day of relaxed hiking in autumn-colored mountains. Jamie easily scaled up the difficulty of the route for me, but there were lots of options for different fitness levels. As it was late November, there were hardly any other people around, so we had all the scenery to ourselves, including the waterfall, where you can swim, if you are not afraid of somewhat chilly waters. I did, and it was fun. After the hike Jamie dropped me off in Girona, advised on the main sights and good places to eat. So I ended up having two experiences in one day: the mountains and Girona. Overall, highly recommended, especially if you want a change of pace and get away from a crowded city for a bit.

Fantastic hike and tour of old city with Ramon. Having grown up in the region, and an experienced guide, he is informative, friendly and a good conversationalist. My daughter and I enjoyed the lovely views on the hike and traipsing around the walled city. Having studied in England, Ramon is extraordinarily proficient in English. We also enjoyed hearing about his own extensive travels through Africa, South America and Norway. 10/10 recommend!

Easy coastal hike: Costa Brava & Girona

Girona city wall, Girona landmarks
The city wall of Girona

Tour Rating: 5/5

Tour length: 9,5 Tour length

Girona is one of the largest but also most beautiful cities in Catalonia. The medieval town offers insights into Catalan culture and history like no other.

On this tour, you combine a hike along the picturesque Costa Brava with a city break in the beautiful old town of Girona.

The hike is rather leisurely and takes only about an hour. Still, there is plenty of time for exceptional scenic views and a subsequent visit to a unique lagoon.

Some of the sights of the city center may even look familiar to you from the series Game of Thrones. But even if you don’t know the series, you shouldn’t miss a visit to the old cathedral in the historic old town of Girona.

The Costa Brava & Girona tour includes

  • Private guide
  • Transportation
  • Coastal walk
  • Visit to Girona
  • Cancellation option up to 24 hours before the start of the tour

The tour definitely lived up to its name. There were only four of us in the tour group plus the guide. Even so, the tour guide was excellent (lively, helpful, knowledgeable, and fluent in English). In the first part of the tour, there was plenty of easy walking along the beautiful “wild” Spanish coast. There was almost no moment when there wasn’t a beautiful, picturesque photo opportunity. The second part of the tour was another amazing walk — this time thru a populace that just happens to live in an amazingly well preserved city of medieval buildings and walls. Pick-up and drop-off was in a central part of Barcelona. We had an excellent time and would strongly recommend the tour to anyone seeking easy to moderate exercise and amazing views.

Catalonia is full of picture-perfect medieval small towns, and I can’t recommend enough that you visit some of them when visiting the region. This tour combines a fantastic hike through the volcanic landscape of Garrotxa with a visit to three extraordinary old villages.

View of the small medieval town of Rupit

Tour Rating: 5/5

Rupit was one of the first of the beautiful Catalan towns I visited after moving to Barcelona and has remained one of my absolute favorites to this day. On this tour, you can combine an inspiring hike with a visit to the rural and peaceful medieval town of Rupit.

This area is still a bit of a local insider tip and, therefore, far less visited than many other areas of Catalonia. Hike along the Collsacabra cliffs and be overwhelmed by the impressive view of the Susqueda reservoir.

Admire the imposing Salt de Sallent waterfall and discover the picturesque alleys of Rupit together with your guide.

Recommended in all aspects, the town is beautiful. It maintains the architectural lines of its foundation, the walk is a dream, trail, waterfalls, native forest, immense cliffs, very safe viewpoints, a lot of history behind this tour. Special thanks to our guide, very concerned, dynamic, knows the route perfectly, human quality above all and that is doubly valued. We recommend everyone and hope to return sooner than ever! Thanks

What you should bring for hiking in Catalonia

Almost all of the hikes on our list occur regardless of weather conditions. So you have to be prepared. Even if the sun shines nearly every day here in Catalonia, there can always be spontaneous changes in the weather.

  • water (especially on warm days, it is crucial to drink plenty)
  • don’t forget your sunglasses
  • and, of course, your camera/mobile phone for the souvenir snapshots
  • In case of rainy weather, bring a rain jacket or rain poncho with you
  • Snacks for the way
  • Money or credit card for snacks or lunch
  • On some hikes, there are opportunities for a cooling swim, so don’t forget swimming gear
